THE CHARACTERS
Mykola Koval (late 30s) - The skilled, but reluctant leader
Mykola, or "Myko" as he's known in the racing circuits, is a charismatic and skilled professional race car driver, whose life has been a whirlwind tour of high-speed races, champagne celebrations, and global recognition. He possesses natural charm and a quick wit, which have always made him a media darling and a favorite among fans. However, the outbreak of war in his homeland forces him to confront a harsh reality where life is fragile and the stakes are beyond personal achievements.
CHARACTER ARC
Mykola evolves from a world-renowned racecar driver, focused on personal glory, to a strategic, almost tragic wartime leader. Accustomed to competing alone, Mykola initially resists taking on a leadership role, but must learn to inspire and guide others, not just through actions but also through empathy and understanding.
Mr. Petrenko (mid 40s) - The Loveable Underdog
Mr. Petrenko, previously known for his calm and disciplined approach as a karate teacher, finds himself in a starkly different reality with the onset of war. He is the quintessential 'fish out of water' in this new scenario, often feeling out of his depth amidst the more experienced and battle-ready members of the group. Despite his shortcomings, Petrenko’s endearing personality and occasional clumsiness provide a much-needed comedic relief in tense situations.
CHARACTER ARC
Mr. Petrenko’s journey is about finding his own unique way to contribute to the group's efforts, despite not fitting the typical hero mold. Initially overwhelmed and prone to bumbling errors, he needs to overcome his self-doubt and find confidence in his unique abilities.
Nina Koval (late 30s) - The Resilient Protector & Steadfast Companion
Nina is the embodiment of resilience and determination and shares the same passion for driving as her husband, Myko. Though she’s a formidable driver in her own right, her strength also lies in unwavering support and deep love for her family. Nina's presence is a blend of warmth and steeliness, making her both a nurturing mother and a fierce protector.
CHARACTER ARC
While her primary concern is the safety of her children, Nina's singular focus sometimes blinds her to the bigger picture and the realities of the situation. She must learn the value of teamwork and trust.
Yana (mid 30s) - The Blunt Maverick & No-Nonsense Expert
Yana, Mykola’s head mechanic, truck driver, and best friend, is a force to be reckoned with. Her personality is as tough as the engines she repairs; straightforward, hard working, and uncompromising. She’s earned widespread respect for her exceptional mechanical skills and is the person you want in your corner when things get tough. Yana's blunt demeanor might rub some people the wrong way, but her heart is fiercely loyal to those she cares about.
CHARACTER ARC
Yana starts off as a stubborn, single-minded character, accustomed to relying solely on herself and seeing the world as practically as she sees an engine. Her journey is about balancing a rigid worldview with moments of empathy and understanding, especially in a war-torn environment where emotions run high.
Pop Pop (70s) - The Sage Connector & Seasoned Mentor
Pop Pop, Nina's father, is a figure of wisdom and experience. An ex-military man, he carries a lifetime of knowledge and connections that become invaluable in the war effort. He didn't initially approve of Nina's choice in a husband, due to his flashy race car driver lifestyle. Under Pop Pop’s tough exterior, hides a deep well of understanding and empathy that comes out when necessary.
CHARACTER ARC
Pop Pop evolves from a behind-the-scenes facilitator to a mentor and strategic advisor, guiding the younger generation in their resistance efforts. His arc is about finding new purpose and relevance in a rapidly changing world.

THE WORLD
RAW & VISCERAL
WAR MACHINES unfolds in a Ukraine caught in the throes of present-day conflict. The setting is a character in its own right, oscillating between the rubble-strewn streets of besieged cities and the sprawling, desolate countryside that tells its own tale of neglect and devastation.
Yet, in this desolation, there's beauty. Vibrant sunsets paint the sky above the war-torn structures and stubborn wildflowers break through cracks in the asphalt. This dichotomy of destruction and natural beauty serves as our canvas, reflecting both the despair and the undying hope that drives our characters.

STYLE & TONE
The film draws tonal inspiration from Red Dawn and Extraction, where ordinary people are thrust into extraordinary danger, yet never lose their humanity. It’s not just the roar of engines or the thunder of war, it’s a visceral, emotional ride through the resilience of the human spirit.
With the gritty, boots-on-the-ground realism of The Hurt Locker, the film balances large-scale action with deeply personal storytelling. Sweeping drone shots of war-torn landscapes crash into high-octane chase scenes and improvised combat. But between the chaos, the camera finds the humanity. Moments of quiet tension, intimate close-ups, and raw emotion ground the spectacle, keeping us tethered to Mykola’s internal journey even as the world around him explodes.
Despite the chaos, our characters remain raw, real, and even with a dry sense of humor, a reflection of their unbreakable spirit. This isn’t about hardened soldiers. It’s about people who refuse to let war erase who they are.

THEMES & SYMBOLS
Resilience
At its core, the film explores the theme of resilience: The human capacity to endure, adapt, and overcome in the face of overwhelming adversity. Mykola’s journey symbolizes a new search for identity and purpose in a world turned upside down.
Sacrifice & Heroism
Mykola risks his life in this new arena, no longer for fame or fortune, but due to a growing sense of duty and compassion. This theme is further accentuated by his initial reluctance; he is not a traditional hero seeking glory but an ordinary individual compelled by extraordinary situations.
Coping Mechanisms
Wryness, used deftly throughout the film, emerges as a theme in itself. A symbol of defiance against despair, a tool for coping, and a bridge that connects characters from different backgrounds.
